Boeing 777-9 Emirates Rejection Leaves 30 Widebodies Financially Obsolete

The Boeing 777-9 Emirates dispute moved into sharp public focus at the 2026 Farnborough Airshow, where Emirates President Sir Tim Clark delivered a blunt verdict on the programme’s earliest-built airframes. Asked directly about the roughly ten 777-9s assembled between 2019 and 2020 and now sitting in storage at Boeing’s Everett facility, Clark made clear that Emirates would not be taking them.

“Heinz would be interested — baked bean cans,” Clark quipped, in a remark that drew wide attention across the industry.

Clark’s rejection applies specifically to the earliest production examples, aircraft that were completed and painted in Emirates livery years ago but have never entered revenue service. Boeing built approximately 30 widebodies across the programme’s protracted development period, and a significant number of those now face an uncertain future.

The core problem is financial rather than mechanical. A seven-year delay between initial production and expected certification has pushed these airframes into a commercially awkward position. Depreciation, storage costs, and the rapid evolution of engine and systems technology mean that aircraft completed in 2019 and 2020 cannot simply be handed over at original contracted values — at least not to an operator of Emirates’ scale and commercial discipline.

For context, the 777X programme was originally expected to enter service around 2020. A succession of technical issues, the global pandemic, and ongoing regulatory scrutiny from the FAA pushed that timeline repeatedly. As of mid-2025, Boeing was targeting 2026 for first delivery, though that schedule remained subject to certification progress.

A Surreal Outcome for a Flagship Widebody

The situation Clark described is almost without precedent in commercial aviation at this scale. The Boeing 777-9 is a 252-foot (76.7-metre) twin-engine widebody — Boeing’s largest commercial aircraft — designed to carry in excess of 400 passengers in a typical two-class layout. That a jet of this size can be fully assembled, painted in an airline’s colours, and rendered financially obsolete before carrying a single paying passenger illustrates how badly a protracted certification delay can distort programme economics.

Boeing has not publicly confirmed how it intends to resolve the stored-airframe question, and no agreement between Boeing and Emirates on those specific jets has been announced. However, the stakes are considerable: Emirates remains the 777X’s largest customer by a substantial margin, with orders covering well over 100 aircraft.

Clark’s very public comments at Farnborough suggest that any resolution will require Boeing to absorb significant financial concessions. How the two sides ultimately settle the dispute over these early jets will likely set a precedent for how the broader 777X programme’s commercial terms are renegotiated after years of delay.
