Why the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Stands Out for Flight Crews
At its core, the 787 represents a generational shift in widebody design. Boeing developed the aircraft with a composite-heavy airframe — roughly 50% by weight — which reduces structural fatigue, cuts maintenance cycles, and contributes to the cabin pressurisation advantage that benefits both crew and passengers on ultra-long sectors.
From a handling perspective, pilots consistently point to the fly-by-wire flight control system as a key differentiator. The system uses electronic signals rather than conventional hydraulic linkages to move control surfaces, giving the aircraft a precise, responsive feel that reduces workload during demanding phases of flight. For crews operating routes that can stretch beyond 16 hours, that reduction in cognitive and physical fatigue matters considerably.
The 787’s glass cockpit, built around large-format displays and an advanced flight management system, also draws praise. Because the type shares significant systems commonality with the Boeing 777 and, to a degree, the 737 NG family, pilots transitioning from those fleets often find the learning curve more manageable than moving to a wholly unfamiliar platform.
Operational and Comfort Advantages at Altitude
The composite construction allows Boeing to pressurise the 787 cabin to the equivalent of 6,000 feet — compared with roughly 8,000 feet on conventional aluminium widebodies. Pilots, who spend far more cumulative hours at altitude than any passenger, benefit from that lower effective altitude in terms of hydration, fatigue, and general wellbeing across a roster of long-haul sectors.
In addition, the aircraft’s fuel efficiency — driven by the General Electric GEnx or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines alongside the lightweight airframe — gives operators the range to open point-to-point routes that bypass traditional hub connections. For pilots, that translates into more varied and often more desirable route assignments.
The 787 family, which spans the -8, -9, and -10 variants, entered service with All Nippon Airways in October 2011 after a well-documented development programme. Despite early battery-related grounding events in 2013, the type has since accumulated a strong operational record across more than 80 operators worldwide. That reliability, combined with its ergonomic cockpit environment, helps explain why the Dreamliner remains a consistently preferred type among long-haul crews.
