From Passenger Cabin to Cargo Hold
As airlines retire aging 767s from passenger duty, conversion programmes are giving the airframes a second life. The 767’s wide lower deck and proven reliability make it a natural candidate for freighter conversion, and demand for converted widebody cargo aircraft has remained strong in the wake of e-commerce growth and pandemic-era airfreight surges.
Amazon Air and carriers such as Atlas Air and ABX Air have operated 767 freighters extensively, underlining how well-suited the platform is to medium-haul cargo work. The economics are attractive: a converted 767 delivers widebody payload capacity at a fraction of the acquisition cost of a new-build freighter.
Boeing 767 Freighter in Military Service
Beyond cargo, the 767 has carved out a durable military role. Boeing’s KC-46A Pegasus — the US Air Force’s next-generation aerial refuelling tanker — is built on the 767-200ER platform. The US Air Force has ordered more than 170 KC-46As, and international operators including Japan and Israel have also selected the type, ensuring 767-derived production continues well into the 2030s.
That military pipeline means Boeing is still manufacturing 767-based aircraft today, an extraordinary situation for a design that dates to the late 1970s. In contrast, the passenger-configured 767 has largely ceded ground to more fuel-efficient types, with most major US carriers either retiring their fleets or running them down.
Why the 767 Endures
The 767’s longevity follows a pattern common in commercial aviation. Widebody jets rarely disappear quickly: once passenger operators move on, cargo carriers and governments step in, extending airframe lives by decades. The Boeing 747, Douglas DC-8, and McDonnell Douglas MD-11 all followed similar trajectories.
For the 767, the combination of a purpose-built freighter variant (the 767-300F, still in production), an active conversion market, and a major military programme creates a uniquely resilient position. Nearly 45 years after its first flight, the Boeing 767 freighter and tanker variants are doing what their designers could scarcely have imagined — keeping a 1970s-era design firmly relevant in the 2020s.
