Kazakhstan Set to Reveal Final AZAL Crash Report Soon

The AZAL crash investigation in Kazakhstan is nearing completion as technical reviews conclude, bringing authorities closer to releasing the final AZAL crash report. The findings are expected to clarify the causes of the Embraer 190 crash and influence global aviation safety standards.

Officials confirmed that specialist assessments from multiple equipment manufacturers—including navigation systems, onboard equipment, and the aircraft manufacturer—have been collected and are currently being consolidated into the final technical report.

The investigation is being led by an international commission involving representatives from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Russia, alongside participation from aircraft manufacturer Embraer and international aviation bodies, in line with global accident investigation standards.

Authorities indicated that the final report is expected within the coming months, following the completion of detailed analysis and verification processes required under ICAO Annex 13 procedures, which govern aircraft accident investigations worldwide.

Crash Background

The aircraft, operating a scheduled Baku–Grozny passenger flight, crashed near the city of Aktau on December 25, 2024, after deviating from its planned route.

A total of 67 people were on board, including 62 passengers and 5 crew members. The accident resulted in 38 fatalities, while 29 occupants survived with injuries. Initial findings from earlier stages of the investigation pointed to severe structural damage caused by external high-energy objects, which led to the failure of critical flight systems, including hydraulics.

Technical Findings

Investigators are working to establish a clear sequence of events, including:

  • The exact moment and cause of the aircraft damage
  • The impact on flight control systems
  • Contributing operational and environmental factors

Officials emphasized that the final report will provide a step-by-step reconstruction of the incident, including technical causes and safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

In parallel, legal authorities are continuing a separate review process, which will address accountability aspects once technical conclusions are finalized.

Aviation Safety Implications

The AZAL crash has drawn significant international attention due to the complexity of the incident and its potential links to external interference in controlled airspace.

Experts note that the findings could have broader implications for:

  • Flight safety in conflict-affected regions
  • Airspace risk assessment procedures
  • Coordination between civil aviation and defense systems

The final report is expected to play a key role in shaping future safety recommendations and operational guidelines.
