Air India Melbourne Flights Surge 44% to Record 10 Weekly

Key Facts

  • Operator: Air India
  • Location: Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) – Melbourne Airport (MEL)
  • Date: Northern winter season 2024–25

Air India Melbourne flights are set to reach an all-time high this northern winter season, with the Indian carrier scheduling ten weekly return services between Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Melbourne Airport (MEL). The figure represents a 44% jump in frequency and surpasses any previous schedule Air India has operated between the two cities.

Air India Melbourne Flights Hit Record Frequency

The expanded schedule comes as Air India rebuilds its international network following a period of significant retrenchment during the northern summer. The airline has identified the Delhi–Melbourne corridor as a priority route for capacity growth, and the ten weekly flights represent its most ambitious deployment on this pairing to date.

Melbourne is one of Australia’s major international gateways and home to a substantial Indian diaspora community, which has historically supported strong two-way travel demand between Australia and the Indian subcontinent. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport also serves as Air India’s primary hub, giving the carrier a natural feed from across India onto its long-haul services.

Context: Air India’s International Expansion

Air India has been in the midst of a broad transformation since the Tata Group completed its acquisition of the carrier in January 2022. Since then, the airline has aggressively grown its international footprint, placed substantial aircraft orders, and worked to restore frequencies on routes that were reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.

The India–Australia aviation market has attracted increasing competition in recent years, with carriers on both sides of the corridor adding capacity to meet recovering passenger demand. A record Delhi–Melbourne schedule from Air India adds further pressure on rival operators serving the route, whether through direct services or one-stop connections via Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian hubs.

Ten weekly frequencies place Air India in a stronger competitive position on the route, giving travelers more scheduling flexibility and reducing reliance on connecting itineraries through third-country hubs. However, sustaining that capacity through the northern winter will depend on load factors and yield performance across what is traditionally a seasonally softer period for outbound Indian travel.
