The reason lies in basic geography. Anchorage sits almost exactly on that arc, placing it within comfortable range of major Asian cities while also offering a natural technical stop before aircraft push on into the continental United States.

Freighter aircraft, particularly widebody types such as the Boeing 747-8F and 777F, carry enormous fuel loads but still benefit from intermediate stops on ultra-long routes. A stop in Anchorage allows operators to top up fuel, swap crews, and in some cases adjust payload — all without the cost penalties of a full diversion.

Unlike congested Asian or US gateway airports, Anchorage rarely imposes the departure delays that can cascade across a freight network.

As demand for faster intercontinental shipping continues to grow — driven by e-commerce and just-in-time manufacturing — Anchorage’s position on the trans-Pacific cargo map looks likely to strengthen rather than diminish.
