Qantas has confirmed a delay to its inaugural international service aboard the Airbus A321XLR, with the launch now pushed back to 2027. The change emerged from the airline’s latest schedule filings submitted to aviation data platforms Cirium Diio and OAG, which track weekly updates from carriers worldwide.

The A321XLR — the extra-long-range variant of Airbus’s best-selling A320neo family — is designed specifically to open thin, long-haul routes that would be uneconomical for widebody aircraft. Its range of approximately 8,700 kilometres makes it well-suited to the kind of point-to-point international flying Qantas has outlined as a key commercial objective for the type.
Qantas had been among the early airlines to commit to the A321XLR, drawn by its ability to serve secondary city pairs nonstop without the seat-count pressure of larger jets. However, the airline’s first international deployment of the type will now have to wait at least another year.
A321XLR Certification and Delivery Context
The delay comes against a broader backdrop of A321XLR delivery schedules that have tested airline planners across the industry. Airbus certified the aircraft in 2024 after an extended test campaign, with Iberia operating the type’s first commercial revenue service in late 2024. As a result, deliveries to carriers further down the order book have faced pressure, and several operators have adjusted their launch timelines accordingly.
